Help me, I'm Twirling

Post by NefariousKoel »

I've been having many problems with my regiments twirling when given a short move or a facing adjustment. The left and right sides decide to exchange places, often while at the edge of the enemy's firing range.

This is happening to me far more than it does in TC2M. Is there some new trick I'm not doing? While watching a ballet troupe being fired on while prancing back & forth could be interesting, I didn't expect it in a Civil War game.

They will switch sides sometimes, I never associated that movement as a twirl, what version are you running?

Do you think he's referring to what's been referred to before on this forum as the SOWG snake dance?

You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

No new trick you're not doing, but there are some things to avoid it.

1. TC the regiments so they only try to change facing on your orders.
2. When you move regiments near the firing line, move them only a little bit at a time. Particularly if you're using the oblique or flank march orders, if you give them just a few orders they normally will be OK.
3. When you want your regiment shooting and they're twirling about, give the double-quick order so they get into their positions and stop twice as fast.
4. When you want to get a regiment out of the fight for any reason, including that they're incessantly twirling, TC them and put them in column, immediately giving orders to run back through a gap in the line. Once they're out of the fighting, recover morale and fatigue and carefully put them back in.

So the problem still exists, but it rarely causes any real problems if you get used to dealing with it. If you're fighting AI, it happens to them too a lot, and if you're playing multiplayer, remember that anything like this also affects the enemy. :)

This was a thought, but I think that he is referring to the left and right side of the lines switching places.

When this happens the units don’t twirl, but walk from one side of the line to the other side, usually after suffering casualties, or moving backwards, but not always!

Yes, the sides changing happens very often but I've also had them completely twirl around and do a 180 as if given an about face.. except they twirl. I think of them both as the same issue.

Most of these happen when I give a manual facing change while in Line formation.

Some will also happen when I give a move order, and change the final facing direction - in Line form again of course. Once the unit has reached it's location in Line, they'll do the snake dance/twirl when changing facing. ;)
