In the game on my computer the streams and rivers are brown similar to the roads and trails. In the old game, they were blue to clear and were much easier to distinguish from the roads.

Is it my computer colors or was it designed this way?

It is designed that way, shows the same on all computers.

There was significant rain the week before the battle. This is reflected in the coloration to show muddy water from the runoff.
