Artillery Not Deploying

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Artillery Not Deploying

Post by the reb »

I don't wish to dulpicate threads and I did do a search but really didn't come up with much regarding why artillery does not deploy, meaning move to where they are needed, or don't respond. In most all cases the commander ride 10-20 feet and stops. Then I read something about we are busy getting the CD out and have not had the time to fix the bugs. What am i missing here? Is there an error with moving artillery in Single Player Mode? Is there a list with all the bugs posted somewhere?

regards,

Once LOS (line of sight) of the enemy occurs, the AI is very stubborn about moving artillery forward...Division level commands become pretty much suggestions. You must TC battery commanders and manually position them to insure placement. Once they unlimber and become engaged, then you can unTC them, and hope they stay, which they generally do.

I think this is your concern. This is not a bug, it is one instance of how the AI behaves. As Norb has said, it's not perfect, but it's unique behavior in emulating commanders' behavior on the battlefield is a primary appeal of this game...and it's constantly evolving.

It's almost like the commanders have real personalities and you're never quite sure how they'll react. Last night I was playing as a Union division commander. I had a battery of 3" ordnance rifles up on a ridge behind my line of troops. Range on the guns was listed as 2000 yards. The Rebs kept moving closer and I kept wondering when Hall planned on opening on the Rebs. Finally at about 450 yards my guns opened on the Rebs.

Which brings up a question, is there a command I can give to my subordinate battery commander to commence firing?
You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

In the courier system the order is, "Open fire."
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

I do like the fact that subordinate units will respond to situations as they see it and factors such as training and command will influence their response to orders given by the player.

However, I do wonder if the Artillery Brigade and Battery officers are a little TOO 'stubborn'?

I understand if the battery is being fired upon already or if it is within effective rifle range but I have become frustrated when trying to deploy batteries well before the action starts.

Taking command of individual guns is a micromanaging nightmare which is also unrealistic IMHO.

I wouldn't want it to be easy to deploy batteries close to the enemy. Perhaps only the best led should be able to do this.

I wonder if we are underestimating the bravery of these crews and the skill of their Officers?

Reb,

I posted about this before, and did not get much of a response. Maybe I was not clear enough. In single player sandbox the arty. is often out front on the road march. They contact the enemy who start firing at them They do not retreat far enough to be out of rifle range. They mill around taking fire and never, I mean never deploy to fire.

Now this is a great game, I love it and the older ones from MMG, but this Arty in single player needs to be fixed. I really think the AI needs to fall back to be able to regroup, out of range and then maybe they will receive orders and deploy to provide fire power.

When you chose the OOB select the one were the artillery is placed with the infantry division. Do not use the OOB where the artillery is grouped by itself. This fixed the problem for me.

But that's not fixing jri's problem.
