HELP Game will not start?!? Black Screen

Hello, and Help!

I just booted up my computer after turning it off (with no updates or anything having been done) about an hour ago. Went to start SOW and the load screen will come up, then go into a black screen. The mouse cursor shows up, but the minute I press a button the game crashes. I have not found anything about this on the forums. The closest thing I found is problems with pixel ratios. I have not adjusted those settings.

That sounds like your virus scanner has messed up the exe. Make sure and disable your virus scanner before you run the game. If that doesn't work (if the virus scanner has "cleaned" the exe) then you might have to re-install. Disable your virus scanner, re-install the game, and then try it.

The only thing that I can think of is that our activation dll was just flagged by your anti-virus software. This might not be the problem, but if you have not changed anything since the last time you played, this is the only thing that I can think of. Some anti-virus programs give a false positive to any encrypted executable, which includes our activation dll. What anti-virus program do you use?

Also, you could try reinstalling to the same location. If you do this, your activation status will remain. As long as you use the same exact location everything should be fine.

The problem seems to lie outside of the anti-virus software. I had ESET on. I turned it off and repeated the problem consistently. Could this possibly lie in the screen res? I am using a wide format monitor?

What is your screen res and your graphic card?

I don't mind reinstalling, but is it possible to save my scores on the campaign?

Also, I have experimented a little with the black screen and it seems that when the mouse cursor shows up, there is only a small box within the screen that the cursor is visible on. This leads me to believe that it could be a screen res thing?

The scores stay untouched if you reinstall.

You could post the content of your SOWGB.log and your activate.log file here.

Okay, just attempted to uninstall (successful) and reinstall (successful). Went to run the program and had the same problem.

I am drawing a blank, now what?
