As I learn the game, I've been losing Generals at an alarming rate, and I notice that a dead brigadier usually spawns a generic captain to command the unit he has left behind. So far, all the replacement commanders seem to have pretty bad stats.
The bad stats I can understand, since it's obviously a stressful time, but it's the rank that bothers me. Why captain? Shouldn't a dead brigadier's command go to a colonel, and a colonel's to a major (or even another colonel)?

At 2nd Manassas, the Stonewall Brigade left the main battlefield commanded by a captain. He was the senior surviving officer in the entire brigade.

I might be mistaken, but as I recall immediate command fell to the senior staff officer until the senior regimental commander could be notified---a laborious, time-consuming task in the heat of an engagement. So, I kind of like the arrangement. But I agree, a capt is a little low for even a senior staffer. A major would be more appropriate.
Sorry. I suffer from a serious case of typosis. Don't worry, it's not contagious

Hell, I can remember Lts. being the Army Commander after some of the Big Battles in TC2M.

Yes, and the same happened at Gettysburg, especially since some brigades were commanded by colonels and got all shot up to pieces.
However, I tend to agree with the "complainant" a colonel or major should take over, perhaps even the historical ones.

Unexpectedly, I just played McPherson's Ridge again. This time, when Archer was lost (is he automatically lost by script?), he was replaced by a colonel.
