Splitting Commands
I am trying to learn how to move and fight using only the courier system. I find it is easier to detach certain artillery units and place them where I need. I was fighting corp level as Longstreet. There was a detached 6 gun battery that I advancing behind McLaws division. Late in the battle I was ready to advance this unit again and noticed that he only had 3 guns. Checked his sheet---he had no casualties and only #2.3. and 5 guns left. Looked a little more and realized that his unit had been split into 2 batteries of 3 guns with the second battery commanded by another new leader. This artillery unit was far enough behind the lines that there were no casualties.
In the same game about the same time the Texas brigade did the same thing.
I played a sandbox game this morning, happened again with an artillery unit. Well into the beginning of a game after I had detached it and placed it, it separated into 2 artillery units splitting the cannons.
Anyone else seen this?

Re:Splitting Commands
I've seen something similar, perhaps more than once.
The only definite case I can recall is at McPherson's Farm (scen 2), when Archer gets out ahead in the woods along with one of his regiments while the rest of his brigade remains back at the fence. The ones at the fence eventually show a new commander (a generic captain with bad stats, as when a starting leader dies) even though Archer is still very much alive and active.
Is this spontaneous engine behavior or scripted in the scenario?

Re:Splitting Commands
There was a historical basis for splitting the battery...but almost always they were split by section. In a 4-gun battery, there were two sections of two guns each. In a 6-gun battery, there were three sections of two guns each. Would be interested in learning the historical precedence for two 3-gun sections.

Re:Splitting Commands
The reason I asked the question in J's last post; Has to do with why the AI can split batteries, whereas the player cannot? There is nothing in the game manual pertaining to this.
Secondly; If the AI is splitting artillery, What's to prevent it from splitting infantry or cavalry?
Thirdly; If a player chooses to combine the split units back into their original(parent) form, How is it done?
Fourth: If the AI has certain abilities in the game that the player does not have, it should be spelled out in the manual to the player, instead of the player tripping over unexpected situations, that might otherwize be considered a BUG.

Re:Splitting Commands
There is an issue with the split command that we have not solved. The command is in the game and does work, but the issue is still there.
I will illustrate the problem with infantry, since the terms are more known. If you are a brigade commander in charge of several regiments and you want to split some of these into their own unit, you have a problem. Say you split off 2 reg's and they get placed under a new brig comm, they are lost to you. You can no longer control them because the new brig comm is the same rank as you and you can only control units that are further down in the chain of command than yourself. So by splitting your strength, you actually lose those reg's. If you are a div comm, it's no problem, but at brig comm, there are many solutions, but no good ones that fit into the current structure of the game.

Re:Splitting Commands
I have not tried it yet and it maybe something I would not want to do, all depends.
For example; Could I detach a brigade (battery) of Union artillery from a Union arillery division, then attach that detached atillery (battery) brigade to a Union infantry division? Thus enable a Union infantry division regiments to capture and keep artillery to that divisions' artillery OOB?

I am not sure how far we got with that, so I don't know the answer to that question, but I believe that was the goal.

Tried and tried again, to attach a detached artillery brigade to an infantry division CO, it would not work, was able to attach a set of artillery from one artillery brigade to another, but that was as far as I got. What I got in mind is to have at least one Union infantry division as a artillery striker force to capture and keep CSA artillery to the Union OOB. Actually I'd like to see if it could be done for either side, using the later period command structure.I am not sure how far we got with that, so I don't know the answer to that question, but I believe that was the goal.

Re:Splitting Commands
This is interesting.
I have a question, is there any way currently to switch units from one player's command to another in a multiplayer battle, aside from when one player leaves the game.
