This is not really a bug, but an issue of how the AI uses an artillery brigade and subsequent path problems in sandbox mode. It seems a corps' artillery brigade, (AB), is treated as just another division. The AI will often send the AB out alone to it's destination without any infantry support. Many times this is the first "division" to move and is far ahead of the rest of the corps. In this respect, it behaves much like a tank column.
As such, it frequently runs into problems, blundering into the enemy. When traveling down a road, or even cros-country, it will continue on a path and run right into an enemy column as if blind. When the AB does this, it does not retreat, but tries to unlimber and fight it out. It is of course destroyed.
It seems that the AB AI does not periodically check its path to see if there is any danger nearby and adjust accordingly. Of couse the AB should not be sent out in advance of the rest of the corps in the first place, but even the infantry divisions would benefit from periodically checking its path and modify its strategy.
I have attached such a sandbox scenario, along with a number of save-points to illustrate this behavior. It shows how both sides "lead with their artillery" and how the Union loses theirs. Hopefully this problem can be fixed as it ruins corp level sandbox play.
