Line of sight

Post by IronBMike »

It seems to me, without doing any real tests on it yet, that LOS in this game is very generous. I feel like I can see over halfway across the map and that hills and trees don't block as much as they should. Is there any merit to this or am I just crazy?

The line of sight design was completely changed in this game from previous ones. It had to be faster due to the large numbers of troops.

Interesting. Faster as in how exactly?

Previously I had come up with this very slow way of building polygons and shooting rays. It worked well, once we got all the bugs out, but it was slow. It was very exact, but the cost to performance was too high. In rethinking this entire thing, one of the items we wanted to do was to prevent to a high degree the reg's from marching through each other especially while shooting. We felt that was a big problem in the previous games. So we combined all this into a system that tries to grid the map to some degree. It is not perfect, but it's much faster and pretty good in most situations.
