Courier system opinions

Post by MikeCK »

I am trying to fight using the courier system only (or as much as possible) and am not having much luck. Certain commands seem to have no effect ...like "advance". I issued that command to Gen Gibbon 3 times and he just sat there doing nothing. Other than that, most of my problems seem to be operator error I am sure. My main gripe is the couriers....why can't they take the most direct route? Its just 1 guy on a horse! Does he need to run north on a road for 500 yards, turn west on aroad for 500 yards, south for 500 yards and then east for 400 yards?....just to get to a genral 100 yards to my west? Usually, they run into an enemy unit. Just seems they should take a direct route.

How have you guys made out with this system. Have you found that it works well? Do units do what you want if only after substantial delay? Do your generals override your orders or fail to respond at all?

Advance does work only if a regiment is enganged.

I intercepted my first enemy courier last night and was able to read his message. Nice feature.
You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

I tried playing on historic with the couriers but that was not possible, it is so close, that it's very frustration. Only thing one would need is a map, where I could put a goal or even better a line where the unit should be deployed or a location to attack, defend. I believe, this can't be done with the 2D current map, ohterwise Norb would have done that already. But perhaps we could have a mixture between historic and "normal" by using the 3D evironment (perhaps set as high as possible) as an order location device without any troops shown in paused mode. This should be accessible in the "move to" order-menu and can be exactly like giving orders on "normal" setting, so the changes are perhaps not as big as using the 2D-map for orders (although that would be best of course).
This would simulate showing a point to attack or to move to to a courrier on the map and he shows it to the recieving officer.
I also noticed that advance often didn't work.
One thing that would be nice until the order system is tweaked, is an option to stay on the ground with the camera, so that I can jump to the generals with the arrow keys and give them direct orders, but am forced to see what they see, or at least in 10 - 100 yards away like in the user options for the main general.

I find that a lot of times in mp you cant always say what you want with the courier, something as smile as i need ammo for my cannons, because every time the divs commander moves so does the ammo wagon making it imposable to resupply. Over all just a lack of not having what I am trying to say to the players on my team. Still a GREAT GAME guys!!!!!!
