A Question on Cavalry

Post by Jack ONeill »

All,

Has there been any thought given to the AI's use of cavalry in the game, both TC2M and SOG?
Specifically, scouting and screening. In TC2Mm the AI's horsemen wander along with the column. I send whatever Cav I have out right away to get some "eyes" on the enemy. I generally don't use the "scout" or "screen" commands, just send them to where I think the enemy might be marching on the roads. I always thought that a bit odd, since so much of the game (TC2M and SOG) is so damn good. As R.E. Lee said, "Stuart is my eyes, w/out him we are blind."
Just a thought.

I'm right with ya. I usually place my cavalry at strategic crossroads, if I have any at all! Cavalry, I see as fast militia, unless of course you label them "elete" or "crack" then you can use them as a fighting force.

The cavalry AI in TC2M was a last minute addition and it had very little development time. For the initial release, we will not be doing much more as the cavalry is involved in only one July 1 scenario and there they are fighting dismounted.

We have provisional plans to add the East Cavalry Field map and a couple of ECF scenarios to some future patch. If we decide to do that then clearly the cavalry AI will get a major upgrade in capability.

Is there some South Cavalry Field Scenarios in the game? It looks like from the Day 2 Map South, there is enough area for the limited combat that took place there on Day 3.

Understand about Cav AI in TC2M. Was thinking more about Sandbox or Open Play combat. Am very much aware Cavalry at this point in the war had been pulled from the Federal (and most Confederate) Divisions and consolidated into seperate Cavalry Divisions and in some cases Corps. Good to know. :cheer:

It would be fun to have some Cavalry MP battles.

I tend to use the cavalry in TC2M almost like tanks in WWII. You can't hold ground with them, but if we need some extra rapid firing to take out some guns, a superior enemy position, whatever - my cavalry is ready to go!

In the TC2M, the cavalry, like the infantry, moves in a column of three. I believe that the infantry columns in GB has been corrected to a column of four. Has the same been down for the cavalry? In actual practice, the cavalry would normally move in a column of fours or a column of twos in a narrow defile.

Thanks

What I did like in TC2M about cav. was the road column command for each unit. Wished it could be done with infantry and artillery units. Sometimes I would leave a detached infantry unit to guard a location or support artillery, hold a VP ect., then at some point have that unit rejoin the brigade, which by that time could be some distance away.

Yah, I liked that too.

I also like it that when you moved your cavalry commander and hit follow roads, the cavalry didn't return to the commander, they just went to the road the shortest route and followed it to the endpoint.

One thing I don't like about the TC2M cavalry is that the suporior cavalry commanders, notabley division commanders had no control over his cavalry, I don't like the time it takes to move every single unit too one location when I could just simply press a couple buttons. But that's just me. Also, I use my cavalry extinsively in scenarios, using them as scouts, VP holders, running down routing units and using them to hold a number of places against attacks!
