I mean, can you select an area for your guns to fire at, and they fire at the closest enemy in that area, or do you have to select each individual target?
You have to select the individual target. You can have a gun fire at a specific target, or you can have an entire battery fire at a specific target.

If a battery or gun "has not" been given specific targeting, will it still function (target) like in TC2M?
Yes.

A little tedious, but perhaps something for Norb to include in the patch (area target selecting).

How would it work? Perhaps shaded areas in the LOS, then tool point a location, seems to me it would take some time to program, however, I'm interested to see where this idea goes.

This point and click was utilized in the older Close Combat WWII series. It has been many years since I played that series of game, but as I recall, it was a simple and rapid task. Perhaps someone on this list can remember the details...otherwise I will look in my "archives" and see if I can find an old manual.

DON'T FORGET IT WOULD HAVE TO BE AN AREA OF VISUAL OPPORTUNITY TO THE ARTILLERY UNIT. TO ME THE PROBLEM LIES IN HOW TO DISPLAY THE ELIGIBLE AREAS.

A follow up thought to what is visible, meaning; structures, hills, valleys, walls, ect., including your own units that could effect what you see. To me in what you could see in TC2M was guess work.

Another thought, when a listed spotted unit or more, shows up on your screen it will also show it's distance, but it might be the distance from another one of your units doing the spotting, not necessarily the distance from the artillery unit you wish to fire from. If i'm wrong correct me.

We do not have area targeting and have no plans to add it. No battery CO would waste ammo shooting at bare dirt. All targeting is at specific units. We do have the new feature of specific targeting or you can let the AI pick the target.

No, I don't believe people understand what I'm saying - An area that contains units, where the officer directs his guns to shoot. So any unit passing through that area is shot at. There is no shooting at dirt just for the heck of it.

This could be done with a right click on the area, then a drag to set the radius of the circle you want the area to be.
