  • New major mod on the way!
To continue the Hundred Days campaign a small mod team is developing the Battle of La Souffel. This recreates the events 10 days after Waterloo in which General Rapp's V Corps, also called the Army of the Rhine (who played no part in the Waterloo battles) met the III Austrian Corps of the Upper Rhine including units from Wurttemberg and Hessen-Darmstadt.

    What the mod will contain:
    - New historical map for the area to recreate the battle
    - New scenarios for the various key points of action during the battle
    - New historically accurate sprites representing the armies of Austria, Wurttemberg and Hessen-Darmstadt

The mod will be available under User Scenarios (i.e. it's free and not part of the core game)

The mod is well underway so will post updates.

    Update on sprites:
    Hessen-Darmstadt infantry
    Hessen-Darmstadt artillery
    Hessen-Darmstadt artillery train
    Austrian infantry
    Austrian artillery
    Austrian artillery train

    Austrian General
    Wurttemberg infantry
    Wurttemberg light cavalry
    Wurttemberg light infantry
    Wurttemberg artillery
    Wurttemberg artillery train

    Austrian flags
    Hessen-Darmstadt flags
    Wurttemberg flags

  • Great news. :)
I hope it'll come along nicely.
A little bit worried about river crossing and urban fighting, though.
That's not SOW exactly at its best, maybe.
But I must admit I don't remember details about how the engagement unfolded...
Still, thanks a lot and eagerly waiting. ;)

  • Totally looking forward to this. Love the fact that you're making a bunch of scenarios for it as well.

Incidentally, if when the time comes, you guys need someone for play testing the scenarios I'd love to help out. Regular play, HITS, couriers, whatever, I'm proficient in all types of play.

You should volunteer to join the team as a tester - NSD are always looking for enthusiastic test team members.

  • Hi guys!

Here a couple of screenshots of the map. Still lot of work to do.

This is a view of Lampertheim town. The bridges are blown. The fight in the vineyards will be very hard!

French troops moving to Soffelweiersheim, another key point of the battle:

  • Project is back on track. I got married so had to shelve things for a while.

Here are some screen shots of new Wurttemberg sprites attacking the French in one of the scenarios.

  • Congrats on the marriage thing Andrew, hope it works out. After being a confirmed bachelor for 37 years I finally committed also. Now after some 30 odd years later I have few regrets, having a trusting and caring partner definitely makes this life thing better.

Excellent sprites, they appear to be your best set yet. Really like the Flags too.

  • Looks pretty good. A little bare bones maybe. Do the Austrians have anything besides infantry to throw at the player? With 3 batteries of artillery this is a landslide French victory every time. Send out some skirmishers to delay the Austrian advance while I set up the fortress and then sit back and watch the turkey shoot.

  • Thanks Rob, in the scenario the austrians have also cavalry. The scenario is balanced in order to replicate the best the real battle. The french hold the wuttemberg troops just south of Souffelheim until the danger on the left flank, but..... (no spoiler :) )

Le Souffel is a battle bad known; only Rapp memories are translated in english, but the description of battle is very bad, also Nafziger oob is wrong. I used for for reconstruct the battle for the german side the usual Plotho and a book on wuttemberg troops on 1814-15 campaign, for the french side the memories of general Fririon and a strasbourg yearly journal of 1815. Of course the german and french side description
of events are different, but you can understand the real flow of actions.

Is considered the last napolenic victory (there's a boardgame on the battle with this name too). In reality at the best can be considered a tactical victory for the french, because they were forced inside Strasbourg fortification.

  • Awesome Mitra. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this. Is this due to be released soon? I've been away from Scourge of War for far to long.

  • yes very soon, this is the first version, the long term objective is to cover all the secondary battles\fights and armies of 1815 and have as sandbox oob with all of them. In the first release the vanilla game full oob as been already merged with the mod oob of Armee du Rhine and the III corps of Armee vom OberRhein (+ 1 a little division of Kaiserliche Oesterreichische Reserve-Armee which was present but didn't take part to the battle).

Gunship and Biondo did a great job with the sprites and the map, the had the hardest part of job

I used new attributes evaluation logic for the units\officers with more difference between elite and militia units, perhaps a little unfair with some units which were militia only because of the name, but more casual player oriented who expects a guard unit to be much more strong that a militia unit.

It's interesting that you say that. I always felt that the French Imperial Guard, in particular the first two regiments of the grenadiers and chasseurs that have that level 8 troop quality, were vastly more powerful than any other troops in the game, whether they be Dutch/Belgian militia or the Coldstream Guard, it makes no difference to the Imperial Guard, they treat them all like militia. In my video series I often cautioned my viewers to avoid ever engaging the Imperial Guard in hand to hand combat because no matter what, they will just lose, and lose bad.

I used to think the Old Guard troops in particular were just a little to powerful for the game, (which is really fun when you are playing them, not so much fun when you are fighting them) until I talked to some people that really knew alot about the history of the French Imperial Guard and in so many words basically told me that the level 8 troop quality was pretty representative of the fact that they were the greatest soldiers on Earth at the time.
